My high school reunion was filled with surprises. The kid graduated only because the teachers had been in a good mood at the end of that year became an English professor at the State University. There were lots of things like that, but the most surprising thing to me was to discover that the kid who ate paste in the first grade became a telephone engineer. I know his bad taste in adhesives had nothing to do with his ability to understand physics, mathematics and electronics, or his skill in comprehensive and critical problem solving and that I certainly shouldn’t hold the bad habit against him for the rest of his life. It just seemed strange to me. I do seem to recall that he loved drawing and that his sketches of what imagined the internal workings of various toys looked like were eerily accurate. His collage work was not great, because, you know, the paste.
